Arthur Bernstein

Sculptor

Biography
I live in Setauket, New York and work in a studio that's an extension to my house. I've been sculpting for most of my life - initially on a part-time basis, more recently on a full-time basis. I have studied with Robert Blood at the Schenectady Museum, with Robert White and Sheila Solomon at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and with Kiril Tzotchev at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills, New York. I am a member of the Long Island Professional Artists Showcase.

Statement
Almost all my work is carved from logs or constructed using either clay or resin. The carved pieces are generally abstract. I primarily use black walnut, which has a rich, warm color and is local to Long Island. I like to develop graceful forms which relate to each other in such a way that the sculpture displays pleasing positive and negative spaces.
The constructed pieces are generally representational. I take the human anatomy as a starting point, possibly exaggerating one or more features for artistic effect. The goal is to display the beauty of the body or life's emotions. The piece is then hardened by heating or cast in bronze or plaster.
